Why is it that East Ilsley still has 3 pubs when many larger villages struggle to support one? Did you know that there used to be up to 14 pubs there? Did you know there used to be 2 breweries in West Ilsley?
"Time, Gentlemen please" (300+ years of pubs and brewing in East and West Ilsley) by S G Burnay. This history of the pubs & breweries of the Ilsleys traces their history and the people who ran them. Many of the people who ran the pubs were not local, but originally came to the village in connection with the Sheep Fairs, the Corn Market or horse racing, and stayed as publicans. There are many links between the new families and older village families - more of a family web than a family tree! West Ilsley was the brewing village - being the home of the original Morland brewery as well as an older brewery, known as Horner's. The book includes an index to the publicans and their families, together with maps and photos. It will be of interest to both genealogists and local historians (as well as those interested in pubs).

This series is aimed at genealogists and local historians interested in the villages of eastern Suffolk. Each book brings together data from tithe apportionments and maps, the census records of 1841 and parish registers to form a detailed picture of village life in rural Suffolk in the 1840's. This is a time period of considerable interest, when many agricultural communities were at their peak population and new industrial areas were starting to build up. In many cases you can identify precisely where your ancestors lived and who were their neighbours and landlords.
Each book contains a full name index, a set of detailed tithe maps, summary maps showing the main landowners and land usage, and an index to the field names identified in the tithes. The tithe apportionments are cross-referenced to the detailed maps to aid in finding each specific plot. Where possible, the census locations have been identified and cross-referenced to the tithe plot numbers.
The complete set of tithe maps which are printed in the Suffolk Snapshots series of books are also available on CD as Tagged Image Format (.tif) files.

This is a series of finding aids for the genealogist and local historian. Each booklet contains an index to the people listed as owners or occupiers of land in the tithe apportionments, which were drawn up in the early 1840s. The apportionments, and the maps that they accompany, detail every field, barn and dwelling in the parish which were liable to tithe rent charges. In some parishes, the lists also include properties that were exempt from tithes. The booklets in this series provide a pointer to the parishes where individuals owned or occupied property.
Tithes were applicable to all classes of people, so that the names included in the index cover all types - agricultural labourers, artisans, farmers, professional people and landed gentry. Because of this broad coverage, the tithes are a very useful way to locate families in the early part of the 1840s. The earliest of the apportionments were drawn up in 1839, the latest in about 1846. Since such a wide range of people are covered, from the agricultural labourer in his tiny tenement cottage to the local lord of the manor with hundreds of acres of land, a letter code has been put against each name to help identify the type of property.
A > 20 acres mainly significant farms B 1 to 20 acres smallholdings or larger houses C < 1 acre cottages, shops, gardens etc. Example of tithe index entry - Word file (.doc) 23kB

The 3 volumes of this publication are a product of a pioneering project designed to preserve and celebrate the rich cricketing heritage of Calderdale and Kirklees in West Yorkshire. The books provide a fascinating insight into the history of local cricket, with each of the volumes covering a different geographical area. Of special interest to local history enthusiasts and cricket fans alike, these books focus not only on the game and players, but also on the social dimensions of the sport and the clubs' strong links with their local communities.
The books contain a selection of the photos, newspaper cuttings and cartoons collected as part of this heritage archive. The title "180 Not Out" refers to the 180 years of tradition of cricket at the local club level in this part of the country.

This booklet follows one branch of the Coulson family who were millers, wheelwrights and wood-turners in North Yorkshire for several generations. They worked around 12 different mills between the North York Moors and the coast. The Coulsons married into the Garbutt, Ayre and Cowell families, all of whom were millers or closely related to millers. The booklet includes several photos of the mills and family trees of the main branches.

Computers are great for organising and storing information but they can be daunting for new users. This booklet is intended to give the local/family historian who is a novice computer user some practical ideas that will help in storing and retrieving their information. It is not intended to be a comprehensive manual but has some simple tips that anyone can use. The examples given in the text are for Microsoft Word, Excel and Works since these are the most common software programs that are likely to be used by the relative newcomer to computers (my apologies to those of you who are Apple users). A limited level of expertise is assumed in the text – you will need to know how to do the following items as a starting point.
Topics that are covered in the main text include
